This is my little brag about Derek and two of his friends Jonathan and Rahm.
Derek has always wanted to try building a video game. He hasn't had training for this sort of thing but Derek loves learning new things. He talked to Jonathan about this fun idea and Jonathan thought it sounded pretty cool. A few friends from work including Jonathan, Rahm and Derek would come over once a week and have a game night at my house. We would play Rock Band or some other fun game. One night while we were playing Jonathan and Derek started talking about a game idea. Rahm sounded interested and they started brainstorming ideas.
One day after work we all headed to Borders to buy some books on building video games. The boys came to my house and after a few nights had build the old Atari game Pong. :-) This is a pretty simple looking game but it was quite exciting to have built something that actually functioned. That is when they decided to come up with a "real" game.
They started a company called Game Knight Studios. (since this all came about of us playing having "game night" together) and they started building their first game (Slide Effect) back in March. It took a bit to get started and to finalize an idea. During this whole process they heard of a competition that Microsoft has for game developers called Dream, Build Play. You can enter your game into this competition to win money and also a possible contract from Microsoft. The boys decided to give it a try. They just finished the tutorial and the first of 7 levels. This is what needed to be done to submit to the competition. It's been pretty exciting. Needless to say I have had the boys at my house quite often and have become the Game Knight Cook. :-) I enjoy having them around and they are great with Aubrey. Its fun to be the "Game Knight Mom". We will find out sometime this month on where they place in the competition. For now, if you are interested and aren't asleep by now, you can view their website at http://www.gameknightstudios.com/. Jonathan was resposible for the artwork, Rahm for the sound and Derek for the programming.
Whether they place high or not, I am quite proud of their acomplishment. It is amazing what they could do with little training in the area.
